"Incantations," narrated by Chris Bonington, is a documentary about the first ascent of "Incantations" (E6-6b) on the Tophet wall in Wasdale, UK, by British climbers Pete Whillance and Dave Armstrong in August 1984. Directed by Paul Berriff in 1985 and produced by Border Television, it is part of the Lakeland Rock documentary series (5/6), which today constitute important documents of the history of modern free climbing and its evolution.

Using rapidly edited, superimposed images of plants, trees, water, the sun and the moon, Incantation weaves a dynamic tapestry of organic forms and textures, combining its images with a fierce rhythmic intensity so as to suggest a kind of natural force. The film was shot entirely in the camera, in 8mm, according to a pre-arranged, music-like score, and then blown up to 16mm using a home-made optical printer. The accompanying sound track, a chant taken from Islamic liturgy, is breath-based and brings the film into the form of a prayer. Written by re:voir. - Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2016.

Operating as a mythopoeic film, the sacrificial script is imposed upon the feminine. Drawing on the spirit of Helene Cixous's fascination with Wilhelm Jensen's Pompeian fantasy novel Gradiva, as well as on Sigmund Freud's essay Delusion and Dream..., these moving images interrogate theological narratives that have historically conscripted women into cycles of self-erasure. The camera acts as an incantation, invoking and releasing an untethered Gradiva carried into non-linear time. Through division, dissolution, a Third Body, and through becoming, the body emerges as a medium that generates language through transmission and renewal.
